About us

Our monthly meetings take the same format throughout the year. A different member chooses a subject for each month – prose, poetry or a play.  We never know what it is going to be until the month before which gives everyone time to research the subject.  This makes the meetings extremely varied and stimulating. It is only plays that we don’t research – just read /act! One member ‘directs’ a play of their choice in which everyone can be an actress/actor for a short while.

We learn so much from each other – we are introduced to new authors, prose and poetry, ending (sometimes) with a discussion about what we’d just heard.

News and Events

Highlights and upcoming events:

Last year we had all sorts of weather prose and read reams of poetry about London but the highlight was the wedding of two of our members in July! – Michael Bowker and Stephanie Rybak were married in a Quaker ceremony in July – family and friends gathered at the Methodist church in Wycombe - the bride looked wonderful; the groom didn’t look bad either – and the rain held off.  Guests, at intervals, stood and either read a poem or said something appropriate to celebrate the occasion, followed by a splendid meal.

2024:
In May Michael directed a play by Peter Ustinov, “Romanoff and Juliet”. A small country is embroiled in the Cold War where the son of the Russian Ambassador fell in love with the daughter of the American Ambassador. (Her mother’s name was Beulah!). The strong minded Russian’s wife, played by Stephanie, was given a Russian accent. All the group were given parts whether a soldier or a General and the play was read in a group member’s house.

In June we explored an Agatha Christie play about a jewellery theft

In July we shared poems about “Birds” - who knew there were so many poems about these! They ranged from “The Battery Hen” by Pam Ayers to Tennyson’s “The Eagle”

In August the subject for our prose was music.

In November all the colours of autumn were there when the 3Ps and Enjoying Shakespeare Groups spent a happy time sailing along the canal on Sheldrake 3 from Nash Mills Wharf at Kings Langley. Five locks out and five locks back meant that progress was very gentle, giving us plenty of time for readings from both groups, not to mention enjoying all the refreshments which everyone brought along. Thanks to Mary for arranging the trip.

In December we enjoyed taking part in the annual Christmas coffee morning in Naphill village hall.
